Between the movie, The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, and the book Night, there are plenty of similarities and differences. An example of similarities is they occur in the same time period (W.W.2), and both of there focus of Nazi Germany is on the camps. But, a major difference is one story is fictional, and the other true, making Night a more terrifying and horrendous story. Another difference is one focuses on someone connected to the Nazi government, and the other is a prisoner at a concentration camp, providing different views on the same events. Another difference involving views is that the movie is through the eyes of a child, a sadly naive one at that, while the other is through the eyes of a young adult that had no one sugar-coating the situation. Personally- I think that although they occur at the same time period, they have huge differences that define them differently- and making them seemingly polar opposites.
In this paragraph, I must analyze a character from either the book or the movie. I chose Gretel, as I think her character is the most interesting. She has blond hair and a rounder face- exhibiting her youth- reflective of her age (which is 12). Her demeanor and character traits fluctuate throughout the movie, but generally portray a selfish adolescent girl that views her brother as a burdensome nuisance. She is also extremely self focused, and trying to be what the people around her expect, and in doing so, buy into the Nazi propaganda heavily, at least, for most of the movie. Although she usually is a jerk to her brother- she does display kindness at meaningful moments- but only when it seems she has empathy for his emotions and what he is going through, although I think that is only because she is probably feeling similar things. An example of this is when she comforts him when there parents are arguing- it would make sense that she would feel the same way that he does about the situation. My thoughts on the Holocaust have not changed at all. I preferred the book over the movie because the book was a true story that gave clear insight on what happened to people in the camps emotionally- and paints a clearer picture of the horror that the camps were the epitome of. My final thoughts on this topic is that I recommend anyone reading this to read the book, The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, as well as Night. Both are good books that are worth reading.
